Western Canada Study on Animal Health Effects Associated with Exposure to Emissions from Oil and Natural Gas Field Facilities
What?
The Western Interprovincial Scientific Studies Association (WISSA) is conducting a Study on Animal Health Effects Associated with Exposure to Emissions from Oil and Natural Gas Field Facilities in Western Canada. The Study’s major components are: Beef Cattle Productivity, Assessment of Immune Function in Beef Cattle, Assessment of Wildlife Reproduction and Immune Function, and Exposure Monitoring.
When?
The Study commenced in 2001 and a public report is expected in 2005.
Where?
The study is more comprehensive than previous research: with a broader geography (involving British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan), a larger number of cattle being studied (200 herds with 33,000 animals) and includes investigation of a wildlife species.
Why?
Previous research on this subject has not been conclusive. The research protocol, including the peer review process, is designed to ensure scientifically sound findings, which would assist in the future development and implementation of recommendations regarding future practices.
How Much?
Alberta Environment has taken a leadership position in providing funding for the Study. Other western Canadian provincial governments have contributed additional funding for the Study; the federal government through the Program for Energy Research and Development administered by Environment Canada, and the oil and natural gas and livestock industries. WISSA continues to seek funding from other sources. Costs for the Study are anticipated to be $17.0 million.
Who is WISSA?
The Western Interprovincial Scientific Studies Association (WISSA) is a not-for-profit organization, federally incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act. The Board of Directors provides management of WISSA and is composed of representatives from the governments of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
A Science Advisory Panel, composed of eleven internationally renowned scientists, reviews and evaluates all proposals or reports relating to the Study in terms of objectives, design, methodology and other matters that may affect the scientific merit or quality of the Study.
